Overview
The stiffness analysis of the machine tool bed, consisting of two welded assemblies - the frame and the platform - was conducted as part of a comprehensive machine tool modernization project. The primary objective was to assess the influence of structural components on machining accuracy, identify critical weak points, and develop recommendations for reinforcement and design optimization.
My Role
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineer.
Results
The analysis identified key factors affecting the structural stiffness:
Critical deformation areas were determined, particularly at specific drive unit mounting angles.
A quantitative assessment of the contribution of bed frame bolted joints was performed, leading to reinforcement recommendations.
Design improvements for the frame and working area platform were proposed to minimize deformations.
Recommendations were developed for modifying the support arrangement and increasing the stiffness of the platform's top plate.
The findings enabled the client to make informed decisions regarding structural modifications for future machine tool models.
